<image:title>Journal - Ikebana at home - Firstly for anyone wondering what on earth an Ikebana is, here is a simple break down. T he word itself is pronounced: i·kei·baa·nuh)</image:title>
<image:caption>Ikebana is the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging, renowned for being minimal and capturing seasonal beauty. The word itself expresses the essence of "bringing flowers to life" through aesthetics and cultural significance. With life now being fast paced, the art of Ikebana at home can allow you to self reflect, connect with the natural world and de-stress. `The finished result of this time well spend, also provides a decoration that is a simple and very beautiful reflection of your moment of mindfulness.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Ikebana at home - Arranging flowers can also be a delightfully inclusive activity for the whole family. You can chose to explore nature with your little ones and gather up carefully selected foliage. Once home you can then enjoy crafting a unique arrangement together and then display it somewhere you can all see it. Alternatively, you can visit a local florist to select a few distinctive blooms to take home to play with. You can really romanticise your life and maybe pick up a cinnamon bun and a coconut milk latte on route home with your self gifted flowers. I mean what’s not to love! Ikebana requires just a few materials and can take just a few focused minutes or many inspired hours. Depending on how long you want to engage with it, the joy level is endless and can be shared or privately indulged.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Ikebana at home - Shape and Form: Try to pick just 3 to 5 different stems that each have their own "flow". Really look at the flora. Some have a straight form whilst others have a more gestural form. I like twisted stems. Size and shape are important too, think about scale. Keep these things in mind, and compare your options. Work naturally by carefully looking at each stem you have chosen and take some time to appreciate it. By engaging in this mediative part of the process, the arrangement almost develops on its own.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Ikebana at home - It’s good to sometimes take a step back or move completely away from your design for a few minutes. You could just close your eyes and take in a few deep calming breaths. When you feel the piece is complete, display it somewhere is can be appreciated and don’t forget to to keep it hydrated and ensure you have added enough water to the frog (or the surrounding bowl if you used one). If you do create an Ikebana arrangement after reading this post then please do share it with me over on my instagram as I will be delighted. Tag; @twinnpottery</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Divergent // my experience as an autistic woman - If I analyse the negative responses, I understand it can be a bit scary when someone points out they have a hidden disability. Particularly one that is stigmatised. But I promise its not that bad really! Knowing that Im Autistic has changed my life for the better in so many ways. This awareness, compassion and understanding has giving me so much. It saddens me that so many have no idea what it means to be on the spectrum. And that this lack of understanding results in so much hurt for those unidentified, loud and proud or even quietly at home struggling with no support.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Divergent // my experience as an autistic woman - These days i’m still the ‘quirky arty type’ but I am also a wife and a mother, someone who has traveled, someone that has a degree, a teaching qualification, a masters of the arts, and years of been a successful lecturer. By most people standards I have done very well for myself and achieved a lot. Yes I did do all of the above and much more, but that creepy internal feeling was always present. I managed to find work arounds to most things that overwhelmed me or I just did it scared. I don’t mean I was just a little nervous and got over it after a nice bath and a good cup of tea! When I flew to Thailand alone (to meet my sister for 6 weeks of travel) I was a more than a nervous mess as I boarded the plane. I was shaking with fear and physically sick. This photo was taken just hours after I landed and I was bricking it. Living with this amount of aniexty is hard especially when you don’t know the cause of it. It takes it toll on your mental and physical health. Over the years I became a master of hiding it. But it doesn’t just leave your body and all the experiences add up to create a post traumatic stress response which you then have to live with.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Divergent // my experience as an autistic woman - At 33 I had a baby. When my son was born, mothering felt natural to me. Breastfeeding, co- sleeping and permanently attached to this freaky little bundle I birthed in water! But again that unexplained feeling was still there. I learnt whether I was teaching or taking time off to parent, if I create a routine, I am my most comfortable and happy. Within that routine, being creative is a must! The new role was hard but his chunky cheeks and loving eyes saw me through the sleepless nights. When he started nursery I thought I could finally indulge in some creative space and return to my former life as an Art Lecturer. I did for a while but it felt disjointed so decided to instead teach adult evening classes because they didn’t require as much of me. This choice meant I had some free time to develop my own ceramic practice and start to see myself in a new way!</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Divergent // my experience as an autistic woman - Now you know little about how I got my understanding, I want to break it down a little, so you can gain some insight and either relate or simply appreciate. No two autistic people look or act the same. Some may share behaviours or mannerisms but there is a spectrum and it’s not a straight linear line where you can pin point whether you are more or less autistic than the next person. It required quite a lot of understanding and knowledge to recognise the traits but when you do it provides you with the opportunity to manage the bad stuff and prioritise the good! The key struggles and strengths can be acknowledged and having an understanding of them is life changing for those experiencing them.</image:title>

Bring this mixture to boil on the hob and allow to simmer for 15 minutes. Use a large spoon to stir and break down the berries. Cool to warm and strain the liquid through a muslin cloth, squeezing gently to release all the juices. Place this in a bottle or jar in the fridge for unto 2 weeks and enjoy with sparkling water for a tasty refreshing treat.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Recycling clay // reclaim - If left uncovered to dry out its teeny tiny particles can become air born and find its way into the lungs, so a specialist mask has to be worn to prevent the serious risk of potters lung disease (also know as Sillicosis).</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Recycling clay // reclaim - I can confirm that I always recycle my clay using two lovely processes. The first being ‘reclaim’ and the second being, creating and using ‘crocks’. I also have a clay trap on my studio sink which is an absolute must for any sink being used around ceramic work. The term reclaim is referring to the process of recycling clay that hasn’t been fired yet. During the making of pieces, mistakes are made and scarps and excess builds up, so rather than throw it away, it can be brought back to its original state over and over again. Even the holes from my oil burners become something new!</image:title>

      <image:title>Journal - Recycling clay // reclaim</image:title>
<image:caption>Over a period of time I collect up the scarps produced from my waste. I need to make sure it is completely dry so I normally leave it near the kiln laid out on a wooden board, but sometimes if my work pattern is right, I just leave it to do it thing in the wheel tray. It dries within a few days and then I transfer it to a bucket with a lid (whilst wearing a mask of course). Once the bucket is full I then fill it with saved slop and a little extra water, ensuring that it is completely covered. Slop is the clay found in the dirty water that I use to throw with. Every time I throw, I leave the dirty water in a second bucket. The following day when all the clay particles sink to the bottom, I pour away the water left sat on top. I’m left with a clay slop which is full of the good stuff that makes clay nice to throw with. The techy term for ‘the good stuff’ is plasticity, which means the element in the clay that allows it to change shape without cracking, warping and all the ‘not so good stuff’.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Recycling clay // reclaim - So slop its like liquid gold and you definelty don’t want to not include it in your reclaim.</image:title>
<image:caption>I leave the mixture to settle overnight, allowing at the dry clay to soak up the goodness and then pour of the excess water from the top. Using a power drill with a paint mixer attached I then mix up the content to a nice butter like consistency. Now the mixture is ready to be transfer to my plaster bats. I use a big old table spoon and serve it out onto the plaster spoonful by spoonful.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Recycling clay // reclaim - once the bat is covered, I use the back of the spoon to smooth it out, like I’m raking a Zen garden, I enjoy making a pattern on the surface which has no purpose other than joy :)</image:title>
<image:caption>the final stage is to leave the clay to dry out for a few days however this timeframe very much depends on the weather and plaster. To achieve the perfect consistency you need to check in on it every now and again. I use a rib at the edge and if the clay is ready to peel off the plaster in one piece then it is done but if it sticks then its not quite ready. its all very goldie locks finding your ‘just right’.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Sustainable Flowers // from the soil to the vase - Do you feel growing flowers connects you to the seasons and the natural world?</image:title>
<image:caption>Absolutely! Everyday there is something new to marvel at, even during winter. I love how you can tell the time of year by what’s blooming and what is finishing, there is a feeling of being gently moved forward as the Earth turns. When I worked in offices I would always longingly look at the window and feel so trapped, I’d try and escape to some beautiful gardens I discovered around Temple during my lunch breaks as a relief. The more I got my hands dirty and worked the soil the more myself I have become - I couldn’t ever image being inside again.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Sustainable Flowers // from the soil to the vase - Do you have a favorite flower and what are you growing this year?</image:title>
<image:caption>Poppies are my favourite as they are wild, strong and beautiful. Ironically they don’t like being cut so I press the petals between book pages and find them months later! This year I have a dedicated patch for them as the seed heads are wonderful to use in arrangements and fabulous for dried wreaths. I’m also growing lots of ranunculus, sweetpeas, snap dragons and Ammi. Lots of this years plants have come from my own seed which is exciting as it means my flowers are truly local.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Sustainable Flowers // from the soil to the vase - And finally can you share with us who inspires you? Ha, this could be a long list. Flower growing wise it has to be Erin at Floret Farm. I’ve been so inspired by her books and enthusiasm when taking her course, I love how passionate she is about sharing her knowledge and getting people growing no matter what size their plot is. Personally, travel is my greatest inspiration, I love seeing and experiencing different places and people. My friends and I went to Marrakech last year which was so special. We visited the most heavenly gardens that made me cry, I’m still looking at and processing the photos!</image:title>

<image:caption>Growing your own - step by step If you fancy sowing some seeds for the first time here’s a quick little guide which details how I do it without a greenhouse, or anything else large or expensive. You will need a few mini pots, a handful of seeds and half a bag of soil. Every year I start growing lots of things this way from flowers to veg. I simply grow and water them on my bathroom window ledge, because in the afternoons its the sunniest spot in the house.</image:caption>

The raw materials are blended in specially adapted panmills, which were once used for blending chocolate at Cadbury’s in a former life.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Sourcing Clay // how and why - The slip house method starts with dug clay being placed in large vats of water known as blungers. It is mixed at this stage to create a slip. This slip is then run through a series of sieves and magnets to remove foreign or course particles. This is important as the raw clay contains all sorts of things from the ground such as stones or coal which could cause problems during the making and firing process later down the line.</image:title>
